Many artists feel that the world of nature in all its forms is the source of true beauty. The feeling is if you can understand nature in all its relationships and if you can repeat those on canvas you will have something special.  Keep in mind when the artist is trying to repeat what he or she sees in nature on canvas he or she is not trying to reproduce a photographic image. Instead the goal is to find the same balance of relationships - colors, line, form, light, that one sees in nature and successfully translates that to canvas.  If you spend time looking at the relationships between things on the canvas you will have a much more enjoyable experience than if you only look at the picture on the surface.
